Sri Sripadaraja Aradhana - 2008

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Dear Hari Bhaktas,

!! Sri Gopinatho Vijayathe !!

Jagadguru Sriman Madwacharya Moola Maha Samsthana
Sri Padmanabha Theertha Parampara
SRI SRIPADARAJA MUTT (Mulabal Mutt)

Sri Sripadarajaru, a prominent yathi in the parampara of Sriman Madwacharya in the lineage of Sri Sri Padmanapa Theertha.

Chintamani, Kalpavruksha, etc. are celestial treasures, would give whatever one wants, when prayed near these.  But, Sri Sripadaraja, fulfills all your wishes by mere darshan of his brindavan or even by mere remembering of him. This is the meaning of the above sloka.

In his poorva avathara of Sri Sripadaraja, as Dhruvaraja, was doing tapas in his tender age to see the Lord.

At the sight of the Lord, Dhruva was dumb founded and could not speak
anything because of over joy. By the grace of Mahalakshmi, he was able to praise the Lord who bestowed him the kingship of the kingdom after which he was made the Emperor of Dhruva Mandala for a period of one Brahma Kalpa, which is 100 years of Brahma.

Dhruvaraja now being the king of Dhruva Mandala is in-charge of controlling the Navagrahas, the Kalachakra, etc. His Loka Dhruvaloka is situated 13 Lakh Yojana above Rushi Mandala from where he controls the movement of Sun, Moon and other planets. Dhruvaraja holds his office of the emperorship of the Dhruvaloka for that period.

Since this is an official post - Dhruvaraja thought that he would not be
entitled to attain Moksha, the desired goal of every soul. He wanted to
know the attributes of God in a disciplined manner during a lifetime in a
place designated for the purpose in the universe i.e. Bharata.
Accordingly, Dhruvaraja came down to the earth in an Amsha and
assumed Sanyasa to complete his Sadana and goes by the name Sri Sripadaraja Theertha.

Sripadarajaru is the incarnation of Dhruva. His contributions to Dvaita, Haridasa Sahitya, and the then existing social and political circumstances were according to a tradition, recorded in the Brahmanya Tirtha Vijaya.

Sri Brahmanya Theertharu and Sri Sripadarajaru were cousins and were roughly of the same age. It is remarkable that both renounced the World and devoted themselves to the cause of their faith and played a conspicuous part in the spiritual development of their gifted disciple Sri Vyaasa Theertha.

Sri Vyasaraja, a perfect and pet shishya of Sri Sripadaraja sings the glory
of his guru in his composition.

Brief History of Sri Purandaradasaru

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Brief History of Sri Purandaradasaru

The general opinion about his birth place is purandaragada near poona. But many scholars believe that he is from theertha halli and Sagar in Karnataka. Purandara dasa is also not new to Maharashtra. This is evident from the high place he occupies in the “Santhamalike” of Maharashtra. Besides this Sri Ajagavker reffers in his book “Maharashtra Kavicharitre” that during18th century Santa Vitoba Anna daphtardar of karad used to say that he was the amshavatar of Purandra dasa and has taken responsibality to fulfill incomplete 25000 krithis . A comparative study of both the krithis have a clear influence of Dasa on vitoba. Present Purandaragada have no Vaishnav Temples except one Shiva temple that belongs to 18th century. Kannada sahitya, culture and customs does not correlate with that of Purandaragads environment.

Vittala of Pandarapur is the Aradhyadeity of Purandara dasa. Marati santhas such as Jnaneshwar and Ekanath have said in their Krithis that Vittal is the deity of Karnataka. Sangli akashavani has programmed in marati “Kaanadaa ho Vittalu Karnataka”.

The Shasana found in Sagar of Shimoga district says that Kshemapura is Purandarapur. This place was a business centre. Dasa Purandara belonged to Nayaka family doing trade and business. It is found from 19th shasana available at theerthahalli and another shasana found in 1400 AD that, “Nayaka” name belonged to the brahmins of theerthalli. Purandaradasa’s son Hebanna, these type of names also as per the customs practiced in Theerthalli. Above all his life and keertanas which strengthen the influence that he belonged to Shivmoga district.

Dr. R. S. Panchamukhi a veteran in exploring shasanas has concluded that dasa’s time was 1480 AD to 1564. Shri S. R. Rao well known explorer of ancient informatics thinks that Dasa’s time was 1491 to 1564. The tamra shasana of 1526 AD available at Kamalapur of Bellary district proves that Purandara Dasa belonged to Vasishta gothra and yajushaka. The same shasana explains that the three sons of Dasa were Lakshmanadasa, Hebannadasa and Madhwapathidasa. Three sons of Purandaradasa have attained youth and were eligible to receive dana from Vyasarayamuni during 1526. It will be pertinent to consider the period of Dasaru as 1480 to 1564.

Purandara Dasa obtained ankitha from Vyasaraja - the rajaguru of Vijayanagara empire and hailed as the ruler of Karnataka Simhasana. Vyasaraja placed Purandara dasas krithis on the pooja Vyasapeeta and gave it the sacred name “Purandaropanishath”. He praised and blessed Dasaru as one who gave the honour and pride to Haridasa sahithya equalent to Vyasa sahithya. He remarked dasaru as “Dasarandare Purandarasaraiah”. Vadiraja, Vijayeendra thirtha, Shrinivasa theertha Kanakadasa, Belur Vaikuntadasa were his contemporaries. Purandaradasa sang the sthothra in praise of his guru after witnessing (1521 A.D.) Krishnadevaraya’s kuhuyoga got nullified by Vyasaraja. Dasaru saw from his own eyes the rule of Achutaraya, Sadashivaraya after Krishnadevaraya and then son-in-law Ramaraya’s too.

When the dolerite of the kingdom suffered a decline due to decline in cultural values and turning towards material pleasure. Purandaradasa cautioned the masses by a krithi ‘ Nechhadiree bhagya’ means do not depend on material pleasure, and be careful. Vijayanagara which was sleeping intoxicated due to its material glory and prosperity perished within a short time after Purandara left his mortal frame.

Sri Padmanabha Theertha Aradhana in Mulbagal

Dear Hari Bhaktas,

Sri Sripadaraja Mutt, Mulbagal cordially invites all hari bhakthas for the annual aradhana of Sri Sri Padmanabha Theertharu at Sri Narasimha theertha, Mulbagal.

Devotees are requested to participate in the occassion and get the blessings of Sri Hayavadana Rangavittalathmaka Sri Gopinatha Devaru, the Great guru Sri Padmanabha Theertharu and Sri Sripadarajaru.

Sri Sripadarja mutt swamiji’s visit to Tirumala – Rare privilege for the peetadhipathi of Sri Sripadaraja mutt at Sri Srinivasa Temple, Tirumala.

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Swamiji’s of Sri Sripadaraja mutt Sri Sri Vignananidhigalu visited Tirumala On 9th Oct 2007 to have the darshan of Sri Srinivasa.

Swamiji along with the parivara, reached Tirumala on 8th Oct 2007 evening and camped at the Sri Raghavendra swamy mutt.

On 9th morning, the higher officials of TTD visited Sri Mutt and invited swamiji for the darshan of Srinivasa.
Accepting the invitation, Swamiji along with shishya paripara came near the Bedi Anajaneya swami temple opposite to the mahadwaram. The swamiji was received at the Bedi Anjaneya temple with “Chatari” maryathe. A grand procession consisting of Veda pandits of Temple, elephants, deevati along with nadaswara party accompanied the swamiji from the Bedi Anjaneya swami temple to the main entrance of Srinivasa.

It is to be noted here that CHATARI maryathe to the peetadhipathi’s of Sri Sripadarja mutt, is the rarest honor bestowed to the swamiji who visit for Srinivasa darshan. Only few Madhwa mutts enjoy this special privilege, Chatari is the representation of Srinivasa at Thirumala. Which means, Srinivasa himself comes and takes the swamiji to his place, Ananda Nilaya. The Chatari maryathe is given to the peetadhipathi’s of Sri Sripadaraja mutt, since Sri Sripadaraja sent his priya shisya Sri Sri Vyasaraja to the Srinivas pooja for 12 years as per the request of Chandragiri Raja.

Through mahadwaram, Swamiji entered the temple. Complete barricade has been put straight from the main entrance upto the garbha gudi of Srinivasa.

Swamiji was requested to have the darshan at the 1st entrance of Garbhagudi. Offerings from Sri Mutt had been offered to Srinivasa. On behalf of Sri Mutt, Arathi was performed to the moola vigraha of Sri Srinivasa. Then temple archakaru presented the Sesha Vastra (Silk cloth which has been used for Moola Vigraha of Sri Srinivasa) to the Swamiji as a respect. Then Swamiji was invited into the garbhagudi and stood near the moola vigraha. Swamiji performed the chamara seva to Srinivas and all the deities in the Garbhagudi. Swamiji then had the darshan of Vyasaraja prathistitha Vimana Srinivasa. As per the tradition, the temple pandits gave manthrakshathe and gandha which has been used in Srinivasa seva to Sri Mutt.

After the darshan, Swamiji returned to Sri Mutt in a colorful precession.

Swamiji offered sambhavana to all the vidwamasaru, arachakaru and officials of TTD as per the Sri Mutt sampradaya.
